Augmented chords can be used across a wide range of musical genres including pop, jazz, classical & more. Augmented chords help us to introduce the #5 note into our music so for example these chords can help us to transition from a 1 major chord into a 4 major chord or a 6 minor chord - there is more information about chords & numbers on this page.

D augmented chord - Basic theory
A D augmented chord is a triad chord, which simply means that it is made up of three notes. The D augmented chord is constructed with the 1-3-#5 notes from the D major scale but you may also like to think about this chords as being a D major triad but with a sharpened fifth note.

D augmented chord - inversions
When we start learning augmented chords on piano, we soon realize that due to the structure of these chords, it means that there are really only 4 augmented chords that we need to learn. For example, if we look at the inversions of the D augmented chord, we can see that we will also be learning two other augmented chords at the same time.

D Augmented 1st Inversion= Gb Augmented
D Augmented 2nd Inversion= Bb Augmented
How to use augmented chords
When we are learning how to play augmented piano chords, it is also important that we start thinking about how we can use these to create beautiful piano music. To help with this, you can visit our augmented chords page, which will be outlining the most popular ways to use augmented chords.
As we mentioned before, augmented chords are a great way for us to introduce the #5 note into our playing. Because of this, there are many different ways that we can use this chord (in conjunction with other chords) to help us create more advanced harmonic structures, which we can then use to create more advanced & mature sounds.
