251 Passing Chords |
Please note that we have shown these examples so that we can illustrate this technique being used to enter into both major & minor chords and from above & below, which helps for learning. Also, it is important to point out here that we can use both dominant chords & altered chords to help create sounds that align with the context of what we are playing.
Finally, it is also important to understand that when using passing chords (and especially with advanced chords) it is best if you can use good voice leading as this helps to give a smooth & professional sound. Also, good voice leading is more easy to achieve when we know a variety of beautiful chord voicings, so these concepts tie in together nicely. |

The basic 251 chord progression can be used in LOTS of different ways. We can use a wide variety of different chords, chord voicings and when we combine this with good voice leading, it can really help us to create a very beautiful, smooth & sophisticated sound.
When learning to play 251's, it is important that we have a basic understanding about the concept of 'diatonic chord scales' in both major & minor keys (please see our chord progressions page for more information about this). Once we understand the number system, we will more easily be able to learn 251's, because we understand the mechanics of how they work. |
Once you learn the different chord extensions, you can now start to learn how to voice your chords beautifully and learn how to create good voice leading so that you can create smooth & sophisticated sounds. From here, the next step is to bring all of these chords together and to help you do this more effectively we have created our chord progressions page.
